Mastersizer 2000 Manual

Two versions of the newunit are available, the Hydro MU (Plate 4) and the Hydro M, both of which aredesigned for manual preparation of wet samples. The higher specification Hydro2000MU has a built in ultrasonic probe with variable output and timer to ensureuniformity of sample preparation. However, as not all materials requireultrasonication to achieve dispersion, the Hydro 2000M without ultrasonicsprovides a highly cost-effective alternative.

Mastersizer 2000 manual

The Hydro 2000M and MUboth use a 1000ml beaker as a sample tank. This is especially useful in areaswithout ready access to a water supply, and the relatively low cost of thisstandard laboratory item means that it can be easily replaced in the event ofsoiling or contamination.

Manual control is via anilluminated diaphragm touch panel designed for use under a wide variety ofoperating conditions. As part of the Mastersizer 2000 system, the Hydro 2000units are provided with a flow cell cassette that is automatically recognised bythe sizer software. This means that there is no need to pre-configure thesoftware and the unit can be used with the SOP (standard operating procedure)utility. Although the SOP software does not control the pump speed, as it doesin the system's automated sample dispersion units, it is possible to ensure thatdetailed operational instructions are displayed on the screen for users tofollow.

The new Mastersizer 2000laser diffraction-based particle size analyzer (Plate 7) from MalvernInstruments reportedly advances particle size measurement to the point where itis now a simple, straightforward and truly routine task and it does sowithout compromising the integrity and reliability of the results.

The Mastersizer 2000 hasbeen developed to meet modern industry's needs for global comparability ofresults, regulatory compliance, maximum efficiency in the laboratory and optimumdeployment of skilled personnel. In support of these requirements, theMastersizer 2000 is stated to be fully automated and easy to use, and deliversclear information based on standardised procedures.

The Mastersizer 2000enables rapid and reliable particle sizing of materials in the range 0.02µmto 2,000µm, for a wide variety of sample types. It incorporatesadvances in engineering and electronics that deliver high resolution and anextended measurement range. The optical bench includes a new RapidAlign facilitythat ensures measurements are continually optimised to provide absolutereproducibility.

To eliminate variationbetween users, the Mastersizer 2000 features a Wizard which leads the operatorthrough the measurement process from first principles. The system also providesfor step-by-step establishment of multiple standard operating procedures (SOPs)for different samples. A library of SOPs is supplied for routine analyses.

Variations in samplehandling are eliminated through the use of fully-automated dispersion moduleswhich control all aspects of this procedure. A choice of sample dispersion unitsmeans that the same instrument works for all types of sample. A novel "plug andplay" cassette system allows two sample dispersion units to be simultaneouslyconnected. New units can be interchanged with a single-handed operation. TheMastersizer 2000 automatically recognises the new sample dispersion unit, eliminating time-consuming and error-prone set up, and is ready to runimmediately.

The robustness of theMastersizer 2000 means that extensive training is not required to enablepersonnel to make reliable particle size measurements. Mastersizer 2000 hasbuilt-in software guidance to ensure that even new users can be confident indealing with a variety of sample types and dispersion units. The softwarecontrol minimises time spent on set-up and operation, and parameters can bepre-defined even down to the detail of cleaning routines, multiple measurementsand automatic result print outs.

Purchasing equipment capable of operating over a broad particle sizing range can be advantages to any organization. The Mastersizer 3000 features a smaller detector that allows to measure an upper size limit of 3.5 mm, although its optical bench size is much smaller than that of the Mastersizer 2000. Moreover, the way of making measurements at different wavelengths is optimized in the new system.

The selection of dispersions is based on the applications for which they are used. Dry dispersers such as Aero S or the Scirocco 2000 dispersers are required for some materials, while liquid dispersers such as the Hydro series of dispersion units are best suitable for other materials.

The Hydro LV offers similar functionalities to the Hydro 2000G for wet applications, enabling the measurement of larger samples of polydisperse materials. The Hydro MV is an alternative to the Hydro 2000S for smaller sample quantities, facilitating less consumption of high-cost organic dispersants and samples.

The Mastersizer 2000 has always been recognized for its software flexibility and user friendliness. Malvern Panalytical further developed this capability for its new Mastersizer 3000 using the latest Microsoft software development tools. The new Mastersizer 3000 software (Figure 3) has all the features of the Mastersizer 2000 software, such as records view, report views, SOPs and data export capabilities, but with easy accessibility and configurability.

Easy maintenance of the system between routine measurements becomes an important consideration, which has led Malvern Panalytical to design a new measurement cell for the Mastersizer 3000 system. The requirement for special tools and manual tightening of the measurement cell windows is eliminated in the new system. The measurement cell can be split with a simple flip of a lever (Figure 5), thereby providing faster and easier access to the inner cell window surfaces for cleaning and helping the system to work optimally.

The Mastersizer 3000 has been designed with all the features that facilitate method transfer from the Mastersizer 2000. The Mastersizer 3000 software can open the Mastersizer 2000 record files. In addition, the results saved in the Mastersizer 3000 format measurement file (*.mmes) can be reanalyzed using all the standard analysis options available in the Mastersizer 2000 software. The Mastersizer 3000 software thus offers a long-term solution to users to access their archive of measurement results.

The Mastersizer 3000 system has a broader measurement range when compared to the Mastersizer 2000. Furthermore, the measurement resolution is improved to below 1µm for both wet and dry measurements. To cover these situations, Malvern Panalytical has created a Mastersizer 2000 analysis mode (Figure 6) within the Mastersizer 3000 software to facilitate switching of the capabilities of the new system to be exactly like the Mastersizer 2000. This, in turn, helps achieve specification transfer more easily.

Malvern Panalytical make provisions and planning to provide support for hardware, software and applications for up to seven years beyond the end of the production cycle of a product. Hence, there will be a considerable period to support both the Mastersizer 2000 and Mastersizer 3000 system.

The expected lifetime of the Mastersizer 3000 increases further into the future when compared to the Mastersizer 2000. This further facilitates the transfer to the new system. Malvern Panalytical also provides full planning and assistance to customers when change takes place.

Malvern Instruments Mastersizer 2000 Particle Size Analyzer and Hydro 2000MUThe Mastersizer 2000 particle size analyzer has set the standard for simple, straightforward operation. Modular in design, it has a wide range of automated sample dispersion units for the measurement of wet and dry samples. These are controlled through SOPs, providing ease of method development and transfer.Broad particle size range suitable for many different applications.Wide range of sample dispersion options for emulsions, suspensions and dry powders.Fully automated simple SOP operation for ease of use and method transfer.Full validation documentation available including compliance with 21 CFR Part 11.Backed up by extensive applications knowledge across many different industries. The Mastersizer 2000 uses the technique of laser diffraction to measure the size of particles. It does this by measuring the intensity of light scattered as a laser beam passes through a dispersed particulate sample. This data is then analyzed to calculate the size of the particles that created the scattering pattern.A typical system is made up of three main elements:Optical bench - A dispersed sample passes though the measurement area of the optical bench, where a laser beam illuminates the particles. A series of detectors then accurately measure the intensity of light scattered by the particles within the sample over a wide range of angles.Sample dispersion units (accessories). Sample dispersion is controlled by a range of wet and dry dispersion units. These ensure the particles are delivered to the measurement area of the optical bench at the correct concentration and in a suitable, stable state of dispersion.Instrument software. The Mastersizer 2000 software controls the system during the measurement process and analyzes the scattering data to calculate a particle size distribution. This sale includes a Hydro 2000MUThe Hydro 2000MU is a large volume manual wet sample dispersion unit designed for use with standard laboratory beakers.Designed to provide wet sample measurements for large sample volumes, the Hydro 2000MU provides:600 - 1000ml sample volume using standard laboratory beakers."Dip-in" sample recirculation head for easy sample access.Continuously variable pump and stirrer ensures bias-free sampling of dense materials.Continuously variable sonication probe to aid agglomerate dispersion.Manual keypad control of all measurement functions.Software driven SOPs with appropriate user prompts to assist with adherence to GLP and ensure reproducibility of measurements.Wet sample dispersion units use a liquid dispersant, aqueous or solvent based, to disperse the sample. In a wet dispersion, individual particles are suspended in a liquid dispersant. The wetting of the particle surfaces by the dispersant molecules lowers their surface energy, reducing the forces of attraction between touching particles. This allows them to be separated and go into suspension. In order to keep the sample suspended and homogenized it is recirculated continuously through the measurement zone. For dispersants with high surface tension, such as water, the addition of a small amount of surfactant can significantly improve the wetting behavior and subsequent particle dispersion. In order to disperse individual particles it is usual to apply some energy to the sample. Often this is through stirring or agitation, but for very fine materials or strongly bound agglomerates ultrasonic irradiation is sometimes used. -range/mastersizer-range/mastersizer-2000/default.aspxMastersizer Serial no.
